| The Gulf of Mexico Marine Debris Project (GOMMDP) was launched in August 2006 in response to the coastal impacts of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Using funding from two Congressional supplemental appropriations, the project surveyed more than 1,500 square nautical miles of nearshore waters along the coast of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana for potential marine debris objects. Over the course of the project, more than 7,100 individual items were identified and mapped. In close cooperation with Federal, local, and state partners, the project team worked to disseminate these debris locations and other information through the project website. You can now view all the data from both phases of the project here, including mapping products, data analysis and outreach tools including multimedia. |
